Chronologically, the was the first major poetic work of Everson to appear since the Rose of Solitude in 1967. Everson first read the poems contained in this book at UC Davis in 1969 - at the completion of the reading, he stripped off his religious habit and returned to private life after 18 years with the Dominican Order. Everson had strong ties to Kenneth Rexroth and was a devotee of Robinson Jeffers' work.
